Everything you do for the resistance earns experience (XP). Enough XP raises your level, and every level past the first gives you one skill point to spend on the character sheet.
XP comes in from:
- Killing occupying faction soldiers (the kill has to be yours, and the victim has to belong to the OF)
- Building anything at a FOB or camp
- Placing anything from the resistance placeables list
- Completing a job that carries an XP reward. The job screen shows the reward next to the cash payout
- Trading at a shop or with a gun dealer. Buying pays a token amount; selling pays a little more the larger the sale
Each buildable and each placeable is worth its own amount, so bigger pieces of work pay more than small ones.
Two things to know about trade XP:
- Buying and selling share one cooldown, so a rapid buy/sell round trip at the same counter cannot be farmed for XP. Only one trade award is paid per cooldown period.
Getting killed costs you a point of XP, but your total never drops below zero.
¶ Levels and skill points
Your level is derived from your total XP, and the curve gets steeper: each level needs noticeably more XP than the one before.
- Level 1 is where everyone starts and carries no point
- Every level after that is worth exactly one skill point
- Points you have already spent count against the total, so your spendable points are
level - 1 minus every skill level you have bought
Points are never lost, so there is no penalty for saving them.
Each skill has five levels, bought one level at a time. The exact percentage at each level is printed on the character sheet.
- Lowers the price you pay when buying, at shops and at gun dealers alike
- Level 1 grants the Import permission, which is what lets you import vehicles and goods
- Level 5 grants Illegal Imports, extending importing to items no ordinary shop stocks
- Shortens the distance at which occupying faction troops start to notice you
- Your recruits are seen using your Stealth, not one of their own
- Note that it affects normal detection range. The close-range check that sees through an OF disguise runs on its own difficulty-set distance instead
- Raises the chance that a civilian you speak to is won over and adds to that town's support for the resistance
- Each civilian can only be approached once, so the chance matters
Open the Overthrow main menu and choose Character Sheet. It shows:
- Your current level and progress towards the next one
- Your XP total and the XP the next level needs
- How many skill points are waiting to be spent
- Every skill, its five levels, and what each level gives
Levels you already hold are highlighted. The button that buys the next level in a skill only appears while you have a point spare and that skill still has a level left to take.
